The mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical evergreen tree believed to have originated in the Sunda Island and the Moluccas of Indonesia. The tree grows from 7 to 25 m (20–80 ft) tall and produces a sweet, tangy and juicy fruit with a deep reddish purple-coloured rind. Mangosteens are also known as "the queen of fruits" and have been shown to have many properties beneficial for health.
In Southeast Asia, Mangosteens have been used for centuries both as a food and medicine. When Europeans first started exploring Asia in the 16th century, they noticed the indigenous people using Mangosteens in many different ways to protect, treat, and ward off illness. The dark purple skin of the Mangosteen was often dried and then ground down to ward off infections. As early as 600 AD, scribes recorded the use of the Mangosteen in the support and maintenance of good health.
The Mangosteen fruit consists of three parts; the pericarp (outer rind), the inner fruit pulp and the seeds. The whole fruit (and the rind in particular) has been found by scientific researchers to contain dozens of biologically active Xanthones.
Xanthones are natural plant chemical substances which demonstrate a list of pharmaceutical properties and are proving to be exceptional substances for good health. More specifically they are a unique class of biologically active compounds possessing numerous bioactive capabilities, such as antioxidant properties, and a restricted group of plant polyphenols, biosynthetically related to the flavonoids.
Among all the powerful phytonutrients found in the Mangosteen, Xanthones stand alone in their impressive benefits. Scientific studies suggest Xanthones may promote healthy bodily function.
To date over 200 Xanthones have been identified, with 40 found in one single mangosteen fruit. The Mangosteen, therefore, has the highest Xanthone count of any plant. Some of the specific Xanthones identified in the Mangosteen include: Alpha-mangostin, Beta-mangostin, Gamma-mangostin, Garcinone, Garcinone A, Garcinone C, Garcinone D, Mangostanol, Gartanin.
Xanthones are considered a potent antioxidant. There are many different kinds of antioxidants and studies have discovered that Xanthones are a much more powerful antioxidant source and are now starting to refer to them as 'Super Antioxidants', more powerful than Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
